Why Site Speed Costs You Sales: A Real 14 MB Case
Last week a business owner reached us saying 'we have a website but it does nothing'. We opened it: decent design, reasonable content — but the homepage alone loaded 14 megabytes, taking around 20 seconds on a mid-range phone over mobile data. Using that case (kept anonymous), here's where slowness costs money, how to measure your own site, and what actually works.
Where slowness costs money
Three places. Visitor patience: more than half of mobile users abandon a page that takes over 3 seconds — if you paid for that visitor with ads, a paid-for lead left before seeing anything. Google rankings: speed is an explicit ranking signal; a 14 MB page sits behind its competitors. Ad costs: Google Ads folds landing page experience into Quality Score — a slow page makes the same click cost more.
Where do 14 MB come from?
The distribution was typical: 4-6 MB photos uploaded straight from a phone (eight on one page), plugin and slider libraries loaded on every page but never used, and an autoplaying promo video. No bad intent anywhere — the site grew over time, every added piece looked 'small'. The total became a storefront that loses customers.
Measure your site in 2 minutes
The free, neutral tool is Google's own PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev): enter your address, check mobile and desktop scores. Trust the mobile score — that's where your traffic is. 90+ is good, 50-89 needs work, below 50 is losing customers. Also open your site on your own phone with Wi-Fi off and count the seconds you stare at the spinner. That's exactly what your customer experiences.
What actually works
The three highest-impact fixes: compressing and correctly sizing images (usually 10 of the 14 MB go here), removing unused plugins and libraries, and lazy-loading below-the-fold content. None of these change how the site looks — they make the same site lighter. In our case these three alone would take the page from 14 MB to under 2 MB.
Our approach — in the open
Our website subscription (from 2,490 TL/month, care included) includes speed monitoring: measured monthly, regressions investigated, compression and cleanup applied. Even if your site isn't ours, the diagnosis is free: send your address on WhatsApp and we'll tell you your PageSpeed score and the three heaviest items openly — how to fix them is paid scope, but knowing what's broken is your right.
Frequently Asked Questions
What score should I aim for?
90+ on mobile is ideal; below 50 needs urgent attention. Check competitors' scores too — that's who you're ranked against.
Will speeding up change how my site looks?
No — done right, it compresses the same images and lightens the same design. The only visible difference is load time.
Do I need new hosting?
Usually not: the problem is the page itself (huge images, unused code), not the server. Lighten the page first; discuss hosting only if it's still the bottleneck.
Is video on the homepage wrong?
No — but it shouldn't autoplay or load with the page. A cover image with click-to-play gives the same effect for free.
One-time fix or ongoing care?
Different jobs: a one-time cleanup fixes today, but a living site (new images, plugins) gains weight again. The lasting fix is a monthly measurement loop.
