Google Says My Business Is "Permanently Closed": Why It Happens and How to Fix It (2026)
A customer finds you on Maps and sees "Permanently closed" in red under your name, with the call button greyed out. Most owners hear about it from a customer first: "Did you close down?" The listing is still public, so this is not a suspension, and the dashboard may show no warning at all. This article covers only that label: who sets it, how to remove it and how long it takes.
Who sets the label
We see three sources. First, user suggestions: anyone on Maps can use "Suggest an edit" to report a place as closed; a few reports in a row and Google applies the label, sometimes at the hands of a competitor. Second, Google's own checks: a phone that goes unanswered for a long time, a changed address, a listing untouched for months or a website that went offline can make the system treat the business as closed. Third, relocation: the old-address listing is marked closed and a new one is opened, the reviews stay on the old one and the old listing keeps appearing as "closed" in search.
If you have dashboard access, the fix takes minutes
Open your listing in the Google Business Profile dashboard; at the top you will see "This business has been marked closed" with a "Mark as open" option. If it is not there, open the profile editor, go to business hours and use "Reopen this business". Google then reviews the correction; in the cases we have handled the label disappears within a few hours to three days, longer if the listing was suspended before. Re-save your hours, phone and address at the same time; empty fields are the most common reason the label comes back.
If you do not have access
If someone else created the listing or you lost access, there are two routes. The fast one is to open the listing on Maps and send "Suggest an edit" → "This place is open"; if you and a few customers do it from separate accounts the review tends to move faster, but Google decides and sends no written reply. The lasting one is to request ownership: Google sends a management request to the current owner, and if there is no reply within three days the listing transfers to you after verification. Knowing up front that you need ownership before you can fix anything saves two weeks.
Deleting and re-creating is not a fix
The most common mistake is to abandon the closed listing and create a new one for the same business. The new listing counts as a duplicate, the reviews and rating do not move over, and the two listings end up hurting each other. The right move is to mark the existing listing open and strengthen it; if you moved, update the address and file a relocation instead of deleting.
Keeping it from coming back
After the label is gone, Google needs to see the listing is alive: a phone that is answered, correct hours, at least one update or photo a month, replies to reviews. A listing nobody touches for months can drop back to "closed" on a single user suggestion.
What we do and what it costs
We handle permanently-closed labels and suspensions with the same method: diagnose the listing's state, run the ownership and verification steps, and submit the correction with evidence. The fee is 5,000 TL, half up front and the other half before the submission goes to Google; once the label is gone, monthly protection and monitoring is 1,500 TL with no lock-in. Google makes the final call, so there is no guarantee and we say so from the start; if you have dashboard access and the label is your only problem, try the step above yourself first, most cases never need us.
Frequently Asked Questions
I cannot see the "Mark as open" button in my dashboard.
Open the profile editor and check the business hours section; "Reopen this business" lives there. If neither exists, your account is not a manager of the listing and you need to request ownership first.
How long does it take?
For corrections made from the dashboard, a few hours to three days in the cases we have handled; for reports sent through "Suggest an edit" the time is open-ended and no written reply is sent.
A competitor flagged me. Can I report them?
Google does not show who suggested the edit; what you can do is mark the listing open and strengthen it. If it repeats, contact Google Business Profile support with the listing history.
My reviews are stuck on the closed listing. Will they move to a new one?
If it is the same business at the same address, mark the existing listing open and keep using it; a new listing does not carry reviews over. If you relocated, file a relocation with Google; reviews are kept in most cases.
