Keyword Research With Free Tools, Step by Step
You don't need an expensive tool for keyword research; the most valuable data already sits inside Google, free. This guide walks through the exact method we use for our own business and our clients' — and at the end we'll say honestly which parts you can do yourself and which parts take real labour.
Intent first: it's a person, not a keyword
Search intent hides in the verb. We measured it in our own campaigns: before this distinction was enforced, more than half the ad budget went to people who would never buy. Start your research not with a word list but with a question: what does the person typing this want to do right now — learn, compare, or buy?
Step 1: Map the landscape with autocomplete
Type your service into Google and let autocomplete finish it; then append letters one by one. That's a free map of what people actually type. Do the same with People Also Ask and related searches — every question there is a content-title candidate.
Step 2: Read Keyword Planner correctly
A Google Ads account is free, and Keyword Planner gives volume and competition from the source. Two reading mistakes to avoid: volume ranges are rough without ad spend — comparisons between keywords matter more than absolute numbers; and the "competition" column measures AD competition, not SEO difficulty. Most paid tools' difficulty scores are largely this same data, repackaged.
Step 3: Search Console — keywords you already rank for are the gold mine
If your site is a few months old, the most valuable free data is in Search Console: every keyword where you appear at positions 10-30 is proof Google already associates your site with that topic. We live this ourselves — we appeared at positions 40-90 for dozens of queries in one cluster, so the strategy is deepening those pages, not chasing new words. Strengthen existing associations before inventing new ones.
Step 4: Read the competitor SERP, not a tool
Before investing in a keyword, search it and study page one: who's there (giants or businesses your size), and what type of content ranks? If page one is all major platforms, don't fight head-on — but tail terms like "companies that build", "price", "recommendation" usually leave room for mid-size players. That's exactly how we picked our own market entry surfaces.
Step 5: Split keywords by intent
Divide your list in three: buyer keywords (build-for-me, price, company, agency — money lives here; ads and service pages point here), research keywords (how, what, comparison — blog content), and irrelevant/DIY keywords (free, myself, template — these go into your ad NEGATIVE list). Unsure where a keyword belongs? Check the SERP: whatever Google shows is how it read the intent.
When to pay for tools, when to hire
Honest answer: for a single business in a single city, the free chain above is plenty. Paid tools (Semrush, Ahrefs) earn their fee when you need competitor DOMAIN analysis and backlink data. If you lack time or run multiple locations, buying the research as a service is usually cheaper; we start every SEO engagement with exactly this research and share the findings openly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to run ads to use Keyword Planner?
No — an account is enough. Without spend, volumes show as ranges; for comparison purposes that's usually sufficient.
How many keywords should I start with?
Intent beats quantity: 10-15 true buyer keywords are worth more than 100 mixed ones. Build three groups: buyer, research, negative.
What if Search Console shows nothing?
Normal for new sites. Confirm your pages are indexed, wait a few weeks, and use autocomplete plus Keyword Planner meanwhile.
Can AI tools do keyword research for me?
For ideas, yes; for volume data, no — models don't know search volumes and may invent them. Verify every idea against Planner and the SERP.
When do results show?
The research itself takes 1-2 days; ranking impact from content and on-page work typically takes 2-6 months. Be wary of anyone promising faster.
