Is Your Instagram Ad Budget Going to Waste? 7 Checks From Our Own Account
Over the last month several businesses opened with the same sentence: I run ads, money goes out, no work comes in. An elevator service tried Instagram after Google; a bungalow resort advertises on Instagram but bookings do not follow; a beauty studio said it was "looking for a better ad person". We asked the same question of our own account, because we advertise every day and have the numbers.
Our table
Last 7 days: 12 ad sets, 11,293 TL spend, 112 WhatsApp conversations, 56 proposals, 2 payments. Our best set is the Google Maps listing ad: 1,946 TL for 50 conversations and 28 proposals, 69 TL per proposal. The worst is our Germany test: 1,409 TL, 115 clicks, zero conversations. A 20x gap inside one account; the answer to "does Instagram advertising work" lives inside the ad set, not the account.
1. Are you measuring clicks or conversations?
Our Germany set got 115 clicks and not a single message. A click is a cheap number; for a business the measure is a message, a call or a form. If your ads manager has no "messaging conversations started" column, you do not know what the ad achieved.
2. Split cost per conversation by ad set
The account total says nothing. Our cost per conversation ranged from 39 TL to 429 TL across sets. Moving budget to the cheapest converting set beats producing new creative; that is why we are raising the Maps set budget this week.
3. Does the creative show what you sell?
Our converting ads share one trait: the service itself is in the image, a Maps listing screen, a sample site, a price. Pain-based visuals ("can't find customers?") get clicks but no messages. The first visitor of our rental-website ad wrote to ask for a dress price; a creative that does not say what it sells attracts the wrong person.
4. Is the audience a business owner?
The same creative shown to Turkish speakers in Germany was clicked but nobody wrote, because the clickers were not business owners. Interest targeting on Instagram is broad; without behavioural signals such as "small business owner" or "business profile admin", budget goes to the curious.
5. Look at cost before switching off the night hours
In August we considered pausing night hours for low conversion rate; hourly spend showed night conversations were 31% cheaper than daytime. Rate alone does not decide, cost does.
6. Wait seven days, then decide
A new set spent 31 TL in its first 12 hours and produced one conversation, with the wrong person. You do not close a set on that; we change targeting only after 7 days and at least 30 conversations. An account that changes settings daily resets its learning.
7. Does the landing point answer?
If the ad lands on WhatsApp, the first reply must arrive within minutes: our median reply across 165 customer messages is half a minute, night included. If it lands on a site, price and contact must be on the first screen; our own website page got 18 visitors in 14 days and zero WhatsApp clicks, the problem was the page, not the ad.
What we do not promise
No "sales on Instagram" or "this many customers" guarantee. What you get is per-set measurement, cost per conversation and a plain-language report every two weeks. Ad budget goes from your card straight to Meta; we charge a management fee and tell you in writing where the leak is within the first week.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you take over my existing ad account?
Yes, the account stays yours and you grant us admin access; the first job is to list cost per conversation for your current sets.
How much monthly ad budget do I need?
It depends on the size of the business; starting at 100 TL a day and scaling on 7-day data is the safest path. The management fee is independent of budget.
Do you also produce Instagram content?
Optionally, alongside ad management, we offer a monthly posts-and-stories package; every piece goes out only after your WhatsApp approval.
