Running Google Ads Yourself: The 7 Traps That Burn New Accounts
You don't need an agency to advertise on Google — opening an account takes half an hour. But across the accounts we manage and take over, the same film plays on repeat: the first month's budget burns, no conversions come, and "Google Ads doesn't work" gets declared. The problem isn't Google; it's 7 traps almost everyone falls into. We've measured each one in real accounts.
Trap 1: Paying for people who want information, not a service
Search intent lives in the verb. In one of our own campaigns, before negative-keyword discipline was set up, 60% of spend went to "how to / build it myself / free" searches — people who would never become customers. Escape: before launching, add "how to, free, myself, template, example, jobs, salary" patterns as negatives, and read the search terms report daily in week one.
Trap 2: Starting with broad match
Google recommends broad match to new accounts — it grows spend. In an account we took over, broad keywords had quietly burned thousands on irrelevant searches. Broad match no longer means "searches containing your keyword"; it means "searches Google DEEMS related". Escape: start with phrase and exact; move to broad only after solid conversion data exists, and in a controlled way.
Trap 3: No cost-per-click ceiling
With defaults, Google can spend a surprising share of your budget on a single click. In a takeover account no ceiling had ever been set; single clicks were going for the price of a lunch. Escape: with Maximize Clicks, always set a CPC ceiling. If you don't know your market's realistic click value, start low and raise it based on lost impression share.
Trap 4: Launching without conversion tracking
The most expensive trap. One account we took over had spent heavily over 10 days showing "0 conversions" — but nobody knew if it was really zero, because tracking had never been installed. Without measurement you can't know which keyword earns money; optimisation becomes guessing. Escape: before the first ad runs, WhatsApp clicks, form submits and phone clicks must be defined as conversions. It's half a day of work and it changes the meaning of every lira spent.
Trap 5: Auto-accepting Google's recommendations
The panel constantly suggests: raise your budget, switch to broad match, enable auto-apply. These also raise Google's revenue — they're not neutral advice. With auto-apply on, Google can add keywords and ad copy without you noticing. Escape: turn auto-apply off and test every suggestion against one question: does this serve my business, or Google's?
Trap 6: Smart bidding with no data
Maximize Conversions and target CPA only work when the account has meaningful conversion history. Handing a zero-conversion account to smart bidding means giving the algorithm your budget with zero signal. Escape: run Maximize Clicks + a ceiling until 15-30 stable conversions accumulate; when you move to targets, set them from achieved cost, not wishes.
Trap 7: Leaving location and language on defaults
The default location setting includes people merely "interested in" your area — you pay for clicks from people who will never visit. In a takeover account, switching to "presence only" produced a meaningful cleanup by itself. Landing page language must also match the search language: sending a Turkish searcher to an English page throws a paid click away.
Should you run it yourself?
Honest answer: if you can spend 15-20 minutes a day, learn to read the search terms report and apply the 7 points above, you can manage a small budget yourself. If you lack the time or the budget is growing, professional management pays for itself — on one condition: whoever runs it should report what they did and why, in writing.
Our number — in the open
Our ad management starts with ADS-1: 2,900 TL activation + 6,900 TL/month (budgets up to 30,000 TL, one platform; campaign setup, conversion tracking, weekly optimisation and a plain-language monthly report included). The ad budget is yours and goes directly to Google — we take no percentage of it. Full tiers are published on the site; our WhatsApp line is open for questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much budget should I start with?
For a local business, 300-500 TL/day produces meaningful data. Less than that can be too little even to learn from; what matters as much as the amount is spending it with measurement in place.
When do results come?
First clicks the same day; a meaningful verdict takes 2-4 weeks. In the early weeks the job is cleaning search terms, not waiting for conversions.
Do you guarantee rankings?
No — nobody can honestly guarantee rankings or sales on Google. Walk away from anyone who promises them.
Is the ad budget included in your fee?
No, it's separate and paid directly to Google. Our fee covers management; we take no cut of your budget.
I already have an account — will you take it over?
Yes — we start with a free diagnosis: where the money goes and whether measurement exists, reported openly. The findings are yours; implementation is the paid service.
