What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of getting your brand cited and recommended as a source in the answers produced by generative AI engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity. SEO lifts you up the search results; GEO aims to place your brand inside the single answer AI gives.

Why has search changed?

People no longer look for every answer among ten blue links. More and more, they ask AI directly and get a single, synthesized answer.

That answer usually names only a few brands. A brand that isn't mentioned is effectively invisible to the user — like being stuck on Google's second page, only sharper.

The difference between GEO and SEO

  • In SEO the goal is to be one of ten links; in GEO usually only 0–1 brands are named.
  • SEO chases clicks; GEO targets being mentioned and cited inside the answer.
  • GEO builds on SEO fundamentals — but its measurement, priorities and levers differ.

What GEO measures and improves

A GEO effort measures first: how often your brand is mentioned in category questions, your share of voice versus rivals, and which sources AI draws from.

Then it improves: by working on brand/entity presence, content citability and technical access, it raises the odds AI mentions you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. GEO is a layer on top of SEO. A brand whose site isn't indexed or ranked won't appear in AI answers either; that's why a solid SEO foundation is a prerequisite for GEO.

Which engines matter for GEO?

In Turkey, ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Gemini come first, followed by Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot.
